Welcome to the “Red Canyon” of France

Adventure in the Devil’s Canyon: The Hérault’s Hidden Red Desert

Forget the crowded beaches of the French Riviera.

Discover something unexpected.

Welcome to Canyon du Diable (Devil’s Canyon) in Saint-Jean-de-la-Blaquière — a breathtaking landscape of deep red sandstone hills called Ruffes, volcanic rock formations, hidden pools, and ancient legends.

Often described as the “French Colorado”, this spectacular natural site in Southern France feels like a miniature Arizona — but without the crowds.

Whether you’re looking for:

  • An adrenaline-pumping canyoning experience
  • A scenic hike through Mars-like landscapes
  • A peaceful night under the stars
  • Or a unique family adventure

The wild heart of the Languedoc awaits you.

Why is it a Must-See in Southern France?

A Unique Geological Marvel Near Montpellier

The Ruffes: 250 Million Years in the Making

The red rocks of the Canyon du Diable are known as Ruffes — ancient sandstone formations rich in iron oxide.

They date back over 250 million years.

Erosion has sculpted:

  • Deep ravines
  • Rolling red hills
  • Dramatic ridgelines
  • Black basalt columns

The result? A surreal desert-like environment in the middle of Southern France.

Off the Beaten Track

Unlike Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert or the Pont du Diable (Devil’s Bridge), this canyon remains:

  • Wild
  • Untouched
  • Quiet
  • Authentic

No beach clubs.
No massive parking lots.
Just nature.

Easy Access

  • 45 minutes from Montpellier
  • 15 minutes from the A75 highway (gateway to Southern France)
  • Close to Lodève

Perfect for a day trip or a stop during a road trip through Occitanie.
